We've Got the Countryside
There are any number of delightful Countryside sites across the District, where visitors can enjoy walking, picnics, cycling and more.
The Cheshire Lines Path is a ten mile route alongside the old Cheshire Lines railway line offering cyclists, walkers and horseriders a delightful traffic free route. A shorter circular walk combines the main line of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal with the Rufford Branch and some quiet country lanes of West Lancashire, along the way discover some interesting architecture and some wonderful wildlife.
There is space to walk, run, ride horses or bicycles, fly kites, or just get away from it all and relax at Beacon Country Park . The Country Park offers 300 acres and is a combination of flowing meadows and woodlands, commanding majestic views across the Lancashire Plain to the west and the Pennine Hills to the east. There are Picnic areas, an orienteering course, nature trail, and bridlepath for everyone to enjoy.
Tawd Valley is a picturesque river valley running through Skelmersdale and Abbey lakes in Up Holland offers a three acre fishing lake and lakeside walk and a further fishing lake at Platts Lane in Burscough.
Waterfalls can be found at Fairy Glen in Wrightington, or enjoy spectacular woodland at Ruff Wood, Ormskirk and Dean Wood, which runs from Up Holland to Gathurst.
