We've Got History

West Lancashire is an area where history sits side by side with contemporary modern life and some of the country’s finest architectural gems are hidden amidst the quaint villages.
Travel back in time in an area steeped in its Viking past, imagine
a bygone era when Shakespeare performed here, visit some of
the areas jewels and discover a rich heritage.

People travel for miles to view the famous 100 foot tower at Scarisbrick Hall, one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in England . The Hall, now an independent school,
was designed by Pugin, the renowned Victorian architect who worked on the Houses of Parliament with Sir Charles Barry, and
the tower was designed by his son, later in the 19th century.

Rufford Old Hall is one of Lancashire ’s finest 16th-century buildings. The spectacular Great Hall has an intricately carved ‘moveable’ wooden screen and dramatic hammer-beam roof. Evidence suggests that Shakespeare performed in this hall for
the owner, Sir Thomas Hesketh, whose family owned Rufford
for over 400 years. The house contains fine collections of
16th- and 17th-century oak furniture, arms, armour and
tapestries. The grounds are laid out in late Victorian style and feature a herbaceous border, orchard, topiary, sculpture and a woodland walk.

Ormskirk's Parish Church , is architecturally one of England 's most unusual churches, as it is one of only three with both a tower and a spire. The steeple dates back to the 15th century, with the massive tower added on a century later. As well as fragments of Saxon and Celtic masonry in the east wall, the church features 12th century Norman work in the north side of the chancel, adding to the historical and architectural heritage within the beautiful building.
